ではなぜ、大学生はそんなに怯えているのか。外的な要因と内的な要因が考えられる。外的な要因としては：

1. 生まれた時から不景気で、周りに「やりたいようにやって社会的に成功した」モデルがいない

2. 子供の頃から「ゆとり」と揶揄され続けている

3. 就職氷河期。新卒採用を逃したら人生終わり、と脅されている

4. 可視化された同調圧力

などが思いつく。1～3は自明と思われるので、4について。ここ最近のテレビ番組で僕がとにかく気になるのが「ワイプ」の乱用である。画面端の矢口真里が、「ここは笑うところですよ」「ここは泣くところですよ」「これはスベってますよ」とシグナルしてくる、あれが非常に邪魔臭い。「あなたはどう感じるべきか」を規定しようとするような、すごく不気味な同調圧力を感じる。そもそも同調圧力には定評のある日本社会である。その上テレビという娯楽においてすら、「この人と同じように感じなさい」というメッセージにどっぷり浸けられてきた世代。彼らが、自分がどう感じたのか、どう考えるのかを述べるのが怖いのは無理もない事に思える。
